Well, hello there

Welcome to my knitting blog!

I've been knitting on an off since I was about 10, I think.  I can't really remember exactly when I started.  I remember that my grandma gave me one of those beginner knitting kits for kids that came with one skein of variegated acrylic yarn and plastic knitting needles.  I was a big crafter as a kid so I was excited to have another type of craft kit to try out.  However, I ended up so frustrated with that kit that I gave it up.  I couldn't really understand the directions and when I thought I was doing it right, my work didn't look like the work in the directions.  My grandma lived on the opposite coast at the time, so she couldn't help at all.  I put the kit away along with my maybe inch and a half of lumpy, twisted, messy knitting.  I think it was at least a year later that I was looking through the craft drawers in the spare room that I came across it again.  There was something about it that made me want to try it again.  Maybe it was the frustration of not being able to follow the simple kid directions or maybe it was absolute boredom with any other activities I could find.  Who knows.  But I did start up again and this time, for whatever reason, the directions were much clearer and I was able to work my way through the beginner kit.  This led to fairly frequent visits to the local Ben Franklin store to pick out a new color of red heart acrylic yarn.

I didn't really make anything in that first year or two besides various sized rectangles and my gauge was an absolute disaster.  I can distinctly remember a variegated green yarn that I had grand plans to make into a scarf.  The beginning of this scarf had good tension and consistent gauge, but slowly it became very loose and the width almost doubled.  I eventually bound off and put it in my stash of rectangles.  I slowly got some friends interested in knitting and we would spend recess sitting on the big wooden boat on the playground knitting away.  I moved on from rectangles and toward some stuffed animals, Christmas ornaments, and mittens.  But then middle school started and, again, I slowly lost interest in knitting.  I saved the assortment of needles and yarn that I'd accumulated over the years and they were stored away in a closet.  I picked knitting back up in high school and started again with knitting mittens and hats.  And then I went away to college and I'll admit, I left my knitting behind because I thought it wasn't cool.  I was the quiet girl in high school and I wanted to be different in college.  (Spoiler alert: I discovered you can't really change yourself that easily.)  So I stayed the quiet me and eventually asked Mom to send the knitting down to Pittsburgh.  It was a bit of a sputtering start, but I've been knitting consistently for about a year now and have picked up crocheting and also started spinning with a drop spindle.  So here we are.  I'm primarily a knitter, but I do want to branch out a bit more and get more skilled at crochet and I would love to one day have a spinning wheel.  I decided to start this blog as a way of chronicling the different projects, yarns, pattern books, and anything else that remotely pertains to fiber arts.

If you feel so inclined, you can visit my Ravelry page.  The projects and stash yarns are up to date, but I'm way behind on the pictures.  It is on my to-do list, I'll get around to it eventually, I promise.
